DC Continues to Dominate with Rebirth
DC Takes 9 of Top 10 Spots
Rebirth’s phased rollout is in its third month and DC continues to dominate sales, taking 9 of the top 10 slots. Marvel shipped 93 comics to DC’s 75 and still came in second, showing that quantity of comics shipped is no guarantee of sales dominance if the fans and retailers are not buying all those books in large enough numbers. DC had 5 #1 issues, two #2s and two issues of Batman in the Top 10. Marvel’s sole Top 10 entry was Amazing Spider-Man #16 at slot #4.
And DC won handily, beating Marvel by a ~8.5% in dollars and ~12.5% in units, the dollar share being lower due to the large number of DC books with a $2.99 cover price (Marvel’s cheapest books are $3.99).
But comic fans are a fickle lot, and they love comics with a big #1 plastered on the front, so when Marvel’s latest round of “Now” #1s hits the stands in October with titles like Champions and Jessica Jones, they may chip away at the Rebirth surge DC is experiencing.
That said, there is a lot of positive Rebirth buzz on the internet and in comic shops I have been in over the past couple of months, coupled with a really lackluster reaction to Civil War II and its spate of tie-ins. This could mean DC will be able to hold on to the #1 Publisher position as long as they can keep the fans interested past the first story arcs on the Rebirth titles.
Or fans might just be shifting their interest away from ‘events’ and relaunched #1s are taking their place as the comics that gobble up the big bucks. If so, we can expect to see more 4 to 6 issue series, renumbering after every story arc, to squeeze in more #1 issues from Marvel/DC in future.

How does Diamond calculate the charts? It all starts at the comic book shop.
Data for Diamond’s sales charts — which includes the monthly market shares and all top product charts — are compiled by Diamond Comic Distributors from sales made to thousands of comic book specialty shops located in North America and around the world. Additional sales made to online merchants and other specialty retailers may be included as well.
Unit and dollar market shares are calculated based upon orders for comic books, graphic novels, and magazines invoiced and shipped to Diamond customers during any given month, which comprises pre-orders, advance reorders, and reorders, minus any copies that are received back from a title marked as returnable. Please note that comics marked with an asterisk (*) have had their reported quantities reduced due to retailer returnability, and thus may rank lower on the charts than their actual sales would reflect.
The New Titles Count Chart includes all titles that were invoiced by Diamond to retailers for the first time during the month and is not the official solicited title count for the month. Variant edition comic books and graphic novels at the same price point count as a single SKU. Variant edition comic books, lenticular covers, digital combo packs, and graphic novels at different price points count as separate SKUs for each edition.
