DC Surges to #1 as Rebirth Kicks into High Gear
Marvel Ships 97 Comics to DC’s 63, Comes in Second
Now that Rebirth’s phased rollout has hit its second month, especially with Batman AND Justice League on the stands (historically DC’s biggest sellers), it’s not surprising that DC has finally grabbed the #1 spot away from Marvel. Marvel, despite flooding the racks with 97 comics compare to DC’s 63 (~50% more product), failed to hold on to #1, showing that sheer quantity offered up for sale is not going to get them the #1 position.
It will be interesting to see how long DC is able to hold onto the top position. They have an initial spike in sales as people give the books a try but (as I’ve said before) I’m not sure how fans are going to like, in the long run, the revolving door art teams for most of the DC bi-weekly books, with very few titles holding onto a consistent art team for the first story arc. Add to this that Marvel is gearing up for yet another “Yes, Really, Marvel Now Now NOW!!!” Relaunch with another crop of #1s in the aftermath of Civil WarII. Fans and LCS ordering patterns have historically followed new #1s like lemmings so Marvel will likely regain #1 by October at the latest.
On the Collected Edition front, Marjorie Liu & Sana Takeda’s Monstress Vol. 1 debuted in the #1 position. This is heartening because it shows a strong interest in new and different creator owned comics. #2 & #3 were grabbed by DC, bolstered by media releases. #2 was Harley Quinn’s Greatest Hits (featuring the Suicide Squad) which ties in to the popular movie. #3 was a re-release of Batman: The Killing Joke, which coincides with the interest generated by the direct to video animated feature that has some fans up in arms over a controversial Batgirl/Batman relationship, but that didn’t seem to dissuade ordering of the Graphic Novel reprint.
There’s a lot to enjoy in comics, be they superheros from the Big Two or creator owned comics. I would urge everyone to check out comics not necessarily at the top of the charts that are put out by the smaller publishers. The books you find out there today could end up being the #1 collected edition a year from now, or even the source of a movie or TV show you’ll enjoy years from now.

How does Diamond calculate the charts? It all starts at the comic book shop.
Data for Diamond’s sales charts — which includes the monthly market shares and all top product charts — are compiled by Diamond Comic Distributors from sales made to thousands of comic book specialty shops located in North America and around the world. Additional sales made to online merchants and other specialty retailers may be included as well.
Unit and dollar market shares are calculated based upon orders for comic books, graphic novels, and magazines invoiced and shipped to Diamond customers during any given month, which comprises pre-orders, advance reorders, and reorders, minus any copies that are received back from a title marked as returnable. Please note that comics marked with an asterisk (*) have had their reported quantities reduced due to retailer returnability, and thus may rank lower on the charts than their actual sales would reflect.
The New Titles Count Chart includes all titles that were invoiced by Diamond to retailers for the first time during the month and is not the official solicited title count for the month. Variant edition comic books and graphic novels at the same price point count as a single SKU. Variant edition comic books, lenticular covers, digital combo packs, and graphic novels at different price points count as separate SKUs for each edition.
